Hakid Thingvellir Visitor Centre

Mannvit designed all engineering for the expansion of Hakid, the Thingvellir visitor centre, on behalf of the Government Construction Contracting Agency. The project was for the design of a 1000 m2 new building west of the current visitor centre at Hakid and a connecting building between them. The design is BREEAM certified, which is a certification system for environmentally friendly design. The new building has a reception and exhibition area for visitors, along with staff facilities. The visitor centre provides information on the national park and the main routes through it. There is also a souvenir shop and a multimedia introduction to the history and nature of Thingvellir.

“The great increase in tourism calls for investment in tourism infrastructure. The current visitor centre at Thingvellir is far from being sufficient for the number of visitors to the national park. It is therefore particularly enjoyable to be able to participate in this ambitious project in Iceland’s most visited national park.”
