Eskja pelagic fish processing plant
Eskja built a new pelagic fish processing plant in Eskifjörður, 7000 m2 in size and with a processing capacity of up to 900 tonnes per day. Processing began at the plant only 7 months after construction commenced. Mannvit was responsible for construction management and supervision, land surveys, along with project management for the buyer. Mannvit also designed installations, a seawater pumping station and a treatment facility that services both the fish processing plant and a fish meal factory. One of the technical innovations is a row of image processors that photograph each fish and throw away damaged fish and unwanted species, as well as selecting the last fish to go in each bag and weighing the bag. Equipment is from Skaginn, Frost and Rafeyri. Efla designed the building, and VHE was the primary contractor for construction developments.

Size“The processing plant is equipped with the latest technology in sorting and freezing pelagic species and creates approximately 40 new jobs on land. Thanks to good co-operation between the contractors and co-ordinated work, the building was contracted and all equipment brought online in 7 months. In such a brief work period, many work components must commence at the same time and be carried out simultaneously, which is usually not the case. The installation of equipment, for instance, began before the casting of the foundations had been completed, and the steel frame building was built over processing lines. Close co-operation and communications between all parties on site was a key factor in making this possible.”
