The nomination recognizes the effort made by Landsvirkjun and their employees in realizing their goal of constructing a cost-effective, reliable and sustainable powerplant in harmony with the environment and surrounding nature. The consulting firms Mannvit and Verkis are proud of their participation in the project, as the main designers of the power plant as well as their role in design and project management of number of tasks. Valur Knútsson and Árni Gunnarsson were chief project managers on behalf of Landsvirkjun, Freyr Harðarson and Claus Ballzus from Mannvit were project managers for design, tendering and construction supervision in addition to Yrsa Sigurðardóttir from Verkis.
Freyr Harðarson, project manager at Mannvit says that the project progressed extremely well and time schedules were met despite the challenging location of the site of the power plant. “It has been a pleasure to participate in the development and construction of Theistareykir power plant and satisfying that the resulting plant has exceeded expectation. Landsvirkjun concluded their responsibilities and tasks related to the Þeistareykir Geothermal Power Plant project successfully, diligently and professionally. We would like to congratulate Landsvirkjun on winning the IPMA Global Project Excellence Award.“
Theistareykir geothermal power plant, with two 45 MW turbine/generator units, is nominated in the Large- and Mega-Sized Projects category, along with projects from five other companies from Italy, China, India, Russia and Indonesia. Theistareykir is the first geothermal power station in the world to be evaluated according to the draft of a new GSAP Geothermal Sustainability Assessment Protocol (GSAP) which was developed by a collaboration of the Icelandic power companies; Landsvirkjun, ON Power, HS Orka and the Icelandic Environment Agency, under the supervision of Mannvit.
