Mannvit is a veteran leader in the design of hydroelectric power plants, with over five decades of experience in the design and development of these projects. Mannvit has participated in feasibility studies, preliminary and tender design, procurement and/or the construction management for the majority of the hydropower projects that have been built in Iceland since 1970, in addition to projects constructed in Greenland and Norway.
Mannvit’s specialists are certified by the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) as designers of hydropower plants in all consequence classes.

Geological, geotechnical, geodetical and hydrological research and analysis is a major basis for any hydropower project. Mannvit has extensive experience and expertise across all of these fields and has supervised studies in these areas for numerous hydropower projects. The company has also handled testing and quality control during construction of tunnels, dam sites and power stations. In addition, Mannvit operates its own laboratory for testing of construction materials, fills, concrete aggregates, concrete, rock samples etc. An affiliated company is Iceland’s leading firm in numerical modelling for groundwater hydrology and river runoff.
Our fields of expertise cover all aspects of hydropower development, such as hydrology and hydraulics, geology and geotechnical engineering, dams, spillways, waterways and associated equipment such as gates and trashracks as well as electromechanical equipment. Our experts are also familiar with the design of tunnels and underground powerhouses as well as conventional above ground structures subjected to severe seismic loads. Health, safety and environmental management as well as general risk assessment are integrated into how we approach each and every project.
Our services for hydropower projects range from research and other preparatory work to complete design and construction management, as well as refurbishment and upgrading of existing hydropower plants. In addition, Mannvit provides services for high-voltage transmission lines and substations.
Mannvit has designed several large plants, partially or in full, ranging from 28 MW to 690 MW. Small hydropower plants have been designed by the Company in Iceland, Greenland and Norway.
The Budarhals hydroelectric plant is located in the lower highlands of southern Iceland on the rivers Tungnaa and Kaldakvisl. Civil construction work on the plant itself began in November 2010 and start-up took place in March, 2014.
