Fosshotel Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Fosshótel, which is owned by Íslandshótel, built a new 104-room, 4-star hotel at Hnappavellir, between Skaftafell National Park and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Developments began in mid-April 2015 and went well, and the hotel opened in the summer of 2016. Mannvit was responsible for all engineering design for the hotel, while the design of cross-glued timber units used for load-bearing structures on the first and second floors were prepared in collaboration with the Austrian company KLH. Mannvit also provided advice on water collection and the access road to the hotel, soil research, the preparation of a geotechnical report and concrete research.

“There are many things to consider when constructing in rural areas. Sewage is treated by way of a two-step sewage treatment plant along with sediment and storage tanks. Drilling for cold water is required, water is heated with electricity and roads had to be built for the project. The construction period for the load-bearing structures of the floors was very brief, with cross-glued timber units, which are an important part of reducing the construction period and facilitating transportation of materials.”
