International Centre of Research and Applied Technology for Alkali Aggregate Reactions (AAR)

An International Centre of Research and Applied Technology for Alkali Aggregate Reactions (AAR) has been established at the laboratory of Mannvit Engineering, in Iceland. The founder of the Centre, Prof. Børge Johannes Wigum, has for the past two decades carried out research and consulting regarding AAR. The laboratory employs a staff of highly-skilled experts in the fields of concrete, aggregate, geological and geotechnical engineering. The Centre operates in close cooperation with a group of international experts in AAR, representing leading universities, research organisations and companies in North America, Europe and Asia. The combined experience of the Centre’s team members covers decades of research, testing and consulting on numerous projects around the globe.

"Reducing the risks and minimising the consequences of expansive Alkali Aggregate Reactions in concrete"

The Rationale and Motivation for the International Centre
Extensive international research has now provided us with the unique ability to harvest decades of domestic and international research, including long-term results from field sites and real structures, to develop and apply effective and reliable performance tests for the mix design of non-alkali reactive concrete. However, research findings by themselves have no practical effect. They need to be put into practice through the action of individuals and organisations. This is the process of innovation.
