Central areas of shopping malls, transportation terminals, schools and other populous places typically have a high volume of ambient sound. Often, assorted services are provided in such places and various events such as performances or parties are frequently held.

Also, people come to these areas for different reasons. While some might be shopping, others are eating, conversing or simply passing through. These places tend to be very noisy which induces stress and anxiety in its occupants.    

Large volumes generally have a long echo and a long reverberation amplifies noise and reduces speech intelligibility. In order to minimize this effect, the space needs as much sound absorption as possible. In this way, noise can be significantly reduced while achieving a more pleasant atmosphere.
