Gymnasiums

Gymnasia, indoor swimming pools and other similar structures have three main functions: coaching/training, competition and recreational use, each requiring very different acoustical conditions. When coaching, the most important factor is for the coaches instructions to be clearly understood everywhere in the building. During competitions, announcements need to be heard and understood. During other activities, recreational or otherwise, it is usually preferable to have a nice relaxing atmosphere where general communication comes easily.

These kinds of buildings are normally of great volume, and sound reverberates a great deal if nothing is done. This can lead to them being perceived as ‘cold’. While this can be suitable for competitions as it is very easy to build up cheering, it becomes nearly impossible to give instructions since speech intelligibility is negligible.

In order to improve speech intelligibility, reduce noise and give a certain amount of ‘warmth’ to a gymnasia or indoor pool, it is necessary to apply sound absorption to surfaces of the hall. To be successful, a compromise must be reached fulfilling the needs of each activity and the final design should be based on the hall’s main function and user needs. Also, it is critical that the design of sound systems be carried out in conjunction with the acoustical design of the space. This will ensure the best results and avoid the need of sound system re-design.
