The Municipality of Fjardarbyggd, Mannvit, and the landowners of Eyri in Reydarfjordur recently signed a project statement to develop a transit harbour and oil terminal in Eyri, which is located south of Reydarfjörd.
The municipality of Fjardarbyggd is located in eastern Iceland and Reydarfjörd is the largest town within this municipality. Reydarfjordur is the largest of the eastern fjords; its deep water makes for an excellent harbour location. Furthermore, preliminary surveys and designs show that Eyri is a geographically desirable location for this project, because there is enough low lying area near the proposed harbour to build oil tanks and support facilities.
Details of the project statement include the following: Mannvit agrees to oversee all design and administration for the project. The Municipality of Fjardarbyggd is the planning authority and will handle all planning issues and regulations for each stage of the project, and that the landowners of Eyri shall not sign any other contracts with other parties until 2015. Following this statement all members of the project statement agreed to proceed with additional surveying.
