Europe's largest composting station opens in Eyjafjördur, Iceland
Friday, August 12th marked the the official opening of the Molta composting station. The station is the largest composting station in Europe and is designed to handle organic refuse from Northern Iceland. The station can handle 10 - 13 thousand tons of organic refuse per year and costs about 500 million in Icelandic Krona.
The station is located at Thveráreyrum in Eyjafjördur and is primarily owned by municipalities in Eyjafjödur, food production companies and others. The construction of the station was an important step in finding a new place for organic refuse, no longer disposed of at Glerárvalley, and in reaching environmental goals for the area.
