Mannvit Opens New Building Materials Testing Lab in Akureyri
A project to extend the Keflavik International Airport runway began last summer and is planned to be completed by June, 2009. The runway will be extended on both ends and the older part of the runway leveled. Plans for the airport also include creating a larger airport terminal building, which is part of overall expansion, plans to make the airport more suitable to service increased international flights.
A local company, Hlaðbæjar-Colas will handle the asphalt installation with the help of Mannvit’s newly opened concrete, asphalt and building materials testing facility in Akureyri which is in charge of quality control. Samples are taken from every 500 tons of concrete as well as drill samples from the terminal. And, constant contact is maintained between the testing lab and the concrete managers while in production since they need as up do date data as possible. The testing is being handled by two Mannvit staff members.
Future plans call for Mannvit to handle quality control for two additional large road construction projects this summer on behalf of Hlaðbæjar-Colas including, road installation for Héðinsfjörður tunnel and continuing to work at the Akureyri airport. With word getting out that there is now a testing site in Akureyri contractors from the area have started to send in concrete samples for testing.
