Fjardaal officially handed over to Alcoa

The new aluminum plant, Fjardaal has been officially handed over to Alcoa. The project is the single largest private-project that has been undertaken in Iceland. HRV Engineers, company owned by three engineering firms, VGK-Hönnun, Rafhönnun and VST, worked on the project in cooperation with Bechtel Contracting Corporation. The project got on its way on July 8, 2004 with a ground breaking ceremony with construction starting in October 2004. Aluminum production started in the plant in April 2007, but the plant was officially opened for business in June 2007.
All projections held in regard to estimated construction time, cost estimates and safety. Over 2000 people worked on the project from at least 23 countries, though majority of the employees came from Polland. It has been noted that no serious accidents occurred during construction, which might be because of very strict safety regulations and vigilant supervision.
