Reykjavik Energy to open two new geothermal power plants in 2010

Reykjavik Energy signed an agreement today with a consulting group on the design of new power plants on Hellisheidi. Fjarhitun, Landslag, Rafhönnun, Rafteikn, TARK and VGK-Hönnun form this group, companies that have worked closely together in the last 20 years with design of geothermal power plants, or ever since Nesjavellir power plant was constructed in 1986.



Hellisheidi power plant is the first power plant that Reykjavik Energy builds on the Hengils area and the plant is currently producing 90Mw of electricity. When completed the plant with produce 300 Mw of electricity and 400 Mw of thermo energy. The power plants that are now being planned are named after Hverahlíð and Bitra and they are top open in 2010. Hjörleifur Kvaran, CEO of Reykjavik Energy said that further research with be conducted to see if the area has more opportunity for harnessing.



Geothermal energy production in Iceland has been increasing in the last decades and now all the most advanced technology available in the World for geothermal harnessing have been used here, first in Nesjavellir and now on Hellisheidi. The specialised knowledge of Icelanders in this area has been recognized world-wide and all eyes are on the advancement of the Icelandic Energy companies and their emphasis on renewable energy.
