Mannvit Awarded Grant from GEORG

In June, 2009 Mannvit Engineering was awarded a grant from GEORG (the Geothermal Research Group) for a research and development project for High pressure and high temperature geothermal grouts. Contracts for the project have been signed.

Dr. Gísli Guðmundsson, a Mannvit employee, is the project manager but other grant awardees were:
  • Reykjavik University, Professor Olaf Wallevik
  • Innovation Center of Iceland, Stefan Kubens
  • ÍSOR, Sverrir Þórhallsson
The grant is the first annual open allocation within the project GEORG (Geothermal Research Group); the project is supervised by RANNÍS (The Icelandic Center for Research).

The project is one of 10 that received a grant from GEORG, a total of 33 applications were received.

The aim of the project is to develop concrete casings for deep geothermal wells where high temperatures and great pressure prevails, but that will be experienced in deep drilling projects of the Icelandic energy companies.

The project will use new device, a Rheo Microscope, for measuring theoretical properties of materials at high temperatures and pressures up to 400 bar, the approximate pressure in a 2.4 km deep drillhole. Earlier in the year RANNÍS gave a grant to buy the device. Mannvit and Reykjavik University also contributed money for the purchase.  The device is located at the Innovation Center of Iceland.
