Powering an economy
Mannvit's operations span virtually every aspect of project planning and construction, including preliminary operations, planning management, environmental impact assessment, design and bidding, safety management and environmental monitoring.
From the outset, Mannvit's working practices have been based on individual responsibility and close-knit teamwork. From its headquarters in Reykjavík, the company operates a network of 7 regional offices in key locations around Iceland and employs almost 400 highly skilled professionals covering the full spectrum of engineering and related disciplines, including civil, electrical, industrial, mechanical, environmental and structural engineers, biologists, chemists, geologists, geographers, draftsmen and technicians.
Building for the future
Over the years, Mannvit has worked on numerous groundbreaking projects both in Iceland and abroad, many of them conducted in some of the world's toughest conditions and harshest terrain. Mannvit employees bring with them a depth of knowledge, experience and expertise which can only be gained from studying and working in different countries around the globe, while the company itself has formed a series of strategic alliances designed to expand the scale and scope of its operations.
Among these relationships is its membership in the HRV Engineering Group, an alliance of three of Iceland's largest engineering consultants which has played a leading role in a wide range of major national and international construction projects, including the design, construction and expansion of the country's three aluminum smelter plants and related facilities and infrastructure.
These projects include:
Planning and preliminary work due to the expansion of the Alcan Aluminum Smelter in southwest Iceland from 100,000 tons per year (TPY) to 160,000 TPY during the years 1995-1997, including the design of a new harbor facility and environmental impact assessment (EIA) for a possible expansion of the plant to 200,000 TPY. In 2001, Mannvit produced an EIA for a proposed expansion of the smelter to 460,000 TPY.
Extensive involvement in both phases of the construction of the 90,000 TPY Nordic Aluminum Plant in southwest Iceland, including an EIA for the now complete expansion of the facility to 180,000 TPY. And, through its alliance with HRV, Mannvit also played a major role in the design and construction of this expansion, which was completed in 2006 and has already produced an EIA for a further expansion of the plant, up to 300,000 TPY.
Close involvement since 1998 in a wide variety of technical preparations relating to the construction of a 320,000 TPY smelter in East Iceland for the international aluminum producer Alcoa that came on-line in 2007. Through its relationship with HRV, the company served as principal contractor on the project in partnership with Bechtel.
Landmark projects
Utilizing the skills of the three member firms of the HRV Engineering group has enabled Mannvit to provide clients, among them local and regional authorities throughout Iceland, with a full range of advice and services relating to construction and civil engineering projects of all types and sizes, including airports, building construction, bridges, geothermal projects, harbor facilities, high-voltage transmission lines, hydropower schemes, road and bridge construction, sewage and runoff systems, sports facilities, transportation, utilities and waterworks.
